NEW YORK Devastated by
Terrorist Attack
RHODE
ISLANDERS ANSWER THE CALL FOR HELP

As we
all know, on September 11, the United States was attacked on its
own soil by terrorists. One commercial airliner was crashed into
the Pentagon, while another crashed into the Pennsylvania
countryside. The worst hit area was the city of New York where in
Manhattan two commercial airliners on route from Boston to Los
Angeles were crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade
Center. Soon after, both towers collapsed, burying thousands of
people in the wreckage and killing many rescuers who had answered
the call after the first tower was hit.
As in
most emergency situations, Rhode Islanders were there to answer
the call. With hundreds of rescue volunteers pouring in to New
York to aid in the rescue and recovery-- many from Rhode Island--
we also answered the call to action in other ways. One important
way was through the Providence Fire Department canteen truck
sponsored by the Salvation Army. Volunteers quickly filled the
truck with supplies and drove it, along with a volunteer staff,
to the WTC site. There Rhode Island volunteers provided food and
drinks to tired and hungry rescue workers.

Rhode
Island volunteers were able to see first-hand the destruction
which has been caused by the terrorists' attack on the World
Trade Center. They spoke not only with rescuers who had been hard
at work trying to find the living among the rubble and to recover
the bodies of the dead, but also to the families and friends of
those who had been injured or killed at the WTC. Jennifer Spencer
and Russell Smith, two good friends of The Post, were kind
enough to provide us with photos direct from the scene.

While
these photos had to be taken from behind chain link fences to
keep onlookers at a safe distance, the pictures are not sharp.
However, it was the feeling of The Post that they accurately
convey New York's devastation. In the photos you can see the
collapsed towers as a heap of rubble and the damage to vehicles
which were blocks from the WTC site. You can also see the
Providence canteen volunteer truck and the makeshift memorial to
the victims which is near the scene.

Students
and staff of PMS raised more than $500. which was donated to help
those in need in New York. We have also had the vicitms and their
families daily in our thoughts and hearts. In times like these it's
good to know that we all play a part in helping one another, this
time PMS community members and other Rhode Islanders lending a
helping hand to the city of New York. Together we all stand as
proud Americans.
